The debate on designer babies produces heated reactions. But now Germany has announced a similar plan for chickens.

On average, 21 million male chickens are culled each year because they can’t produce eggs.

But now Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt has announced huge progress has been made in determining the sex of the bird before it hatches. This will, in theory, enable gender-selective abortion.
