The president’s campaign slogan ‘Yes We Can’ proved to be incredibly popular and effective, but, according to someone on the inside, upon first learning of it Obama expressed concerns that the line was ‘too corny’.

In an interview with the New York Times, Obama's former political advisor David Axelrod recalled the time the then candidate first encountered the saying.

Long ago, he, the future president, and Michelle were getting ready to film an ad spot for Obama’s US Senate campaign.

Said Axelrod, “He read through the script once, and after the first take he said, ‘Gee, is that too corny?’ I explained why I thought it was a great tagline, and he turned to Michelle and said, ‘What do you think?’ She just slowly shook her head from side to side and said, ‘Not corny.’ Thank God she was there that day."
