The Stories Behind the Tweets, hosted by William Parra, seeks to open a window to the world, to get to the bottom of stories larger than 140 characters. Today our host takes us to Spain, Cape Verde and Argentina in search of new stories. In the dusk and darkness of the mines of Spain, we meet striking miners who have faced deadly accidents and loss of work in a country that has coal reserves to last 400 years yet does nothing to keep the mines open. In Cape Verde, painter and poet Tchalé Figueira speaks of the way he uses his “beautifully ugly” art to denounce corruption, hypocrisy, repression and everything that limits human freedom. Buenos Aires is the scene of a movement of artists who are escaping the limits of galleries and museums by going out into the streets “to face the wall,” as they experiment with colors, stencils and images. Lean Frizzera, Fio Silva and Pablo Alvarado are just a few of those whose art is becoming well known.
