Jordanian armed forces have intensified air strikes on strategic ISIL bases throughout Syria and Iraq.
According to a spokesman for the country’s Royal Air Force, the raids are going to continue for the foreseeable future.
The most recent strikes are in retaliation for the murder of a captured Jordanian pilot, who was burnt alive by the Islamic State militant group.
Speaking on Sunday (February 8), General Mansour al-Jabou outlined Jordan’s strategy:
“Firstly, we’re targeting top leadership, with al-Baghdadi at the helm. The second target is the group’s illegal revenues, which they’ve amassed through sales of crude oil. Thirdly, we want to weaken and destroy training and logistics centres.”
He added that Jordanian air strikes had attacked 56 ISIL bases in the past three days, but didn’t stipulate their exact locations.
The announcement came amid local media reports that the United Arab Emirates has deployed a squadron of F16 fighters to Jordan to assist with the raids.
