Three huts built by prominent explorers during early the 1900s in Antarctica have been preserved by conservationists in addition to more than 18,000 artifacts that show how the men lived and worked.

A decade-plus effort to restore three huts and artifacts of Antarctic explorers from the early 1900s has been completed.

The preserved structures include Robert Falcon Scott’s 1902 “Discovery Hut,” his 1911 “Terra Nova Hut,” and Ernest Shackleton’s 1908 “Nimrod Hut.”

Among conservationists’ challenges to work through--snow that reached the buildings’ roofs and floors that seemed like solid ice.

Part of the big effort last year was to remove the remaining snow and ice.

The team, which involved 62 specialists from 11 countries, also worked to preserve 18,202 artifacts in the buildings.

Items included clothing, equipment, and food supplies highlighted by hundred-year old butter and a secret stash of whiskey.
