For many families, it's a custom to drop ashes of those passed away, in an ocean or a river.

On Saturday, 51-year-old, Shane Galliers was pulled into the sea by a large wave while scattering the ashes of a loved one in North Cornwall, UK.

The family waited for the sea to calm before spreading the ashes of Shane's sister on a beach. Shane walked out further than everyone else and was soon hit by the wave, which quickly pulled him into the ocean.

According to Shane's mother Patricia, he was wearing thick clothing that made it very hard for him to swim back to shore. Two people who were part of his group attempted to save him, but were unsuccessful.

Rescuers were dispatched to the scene to search for Shane. On Sunday, however, the search efforts were cancelled.
