Researchers believe that Iceland’s rising crust could be behind the region’s surge in volcanic activity and that there’s likely more to come.
A new study indicates that the melting ice caps covering Iceland are directly related to its rising crust, and in recent years that’s been happening at an increasingly rapid rate.
Researchers from the University of Arizona and the University of Iceland now believe this could be behind the region’s surge in volcanic activity over the past 5 years. If that is the case there’s likely more to come.
Their study, which will be published in an upcoming issue of ‘Geophysical Research Letters,’ outlines the connection between glacial loss and upward moving land.
They say the two are definitely linked, and that the surge in activity began 30 years ago at the onset of global warming.
The phenomenon is called ‘bounce’ and has been likened to what happens when weights are taken off of a trampoline.
