Elusive Red Fox Spotted In Yosemite National Park

For the first time in nearly 100 years, a Sierra Nevada Red Fox was spotted twice on film roaming Yosemite National Park.

It's not that unusual to see a fox in Yosemite National Park.

However, a Sierra Nevada red fox hasn't been seen in the park for almost 100 years. That is, until it was recently spotted not once, but twice, by motion-sensitive cameras in the backwoods.

Its first appearance was on December 13, 2014, and again on January 4th, 2015.

The cameras had been set up by researchers staffed by the park known as the Yosemite Carnivore Crew.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, this type of fox is a solitary creature and prefers rugged terrain.

The exact number of foxes left in the species is unknown, but a population known to inhabit the Lassen Peak area in northern California is estimated to be as many as 50, or as few as 15. Scientists aren't sure why the population is so small.
