The magic ingredient is Lactobacillus rhamnosus, a probiotic commonly found in yogurt.
In trials over 80 percent of the children who received the treatment were able to overcome their peanut issues, while less than 4 percent of those given a placebo had the same success.
Overall, around 60 children between the ages of 1 and 10 were involved in the study.
A portion of the group was given a ‘fixed daily dose’ of the probiotic along with an increasing amount of peanut protein over the course of 18 months, while the others were given a placebo.
The next phase of the study is to have participants take a break from eating peanuts for up to 8 weeks, and then resume snacking on them.
