Police have carried out more than a dozen anti-terror raids in France, Belgium and Germany as European governments step up efforts to fight the threat from radical Islamists.

Belgian police detained 15 people on Friday alone. It comes after police raided a flat in Verviers killing two gunmen suspected of an imminent attack.

The country remains on high alert and troops have been called up to boost security, however the prime minister says a specific threat does not exist.

Authorities in Paris detained a dozen or so suspects believed to have aided the gunmen in the attacks in the French capital over one week ago.

In Germany, police swooped on 11 sites in Berlin and arrested two people suspected of terror links to the ISIL militant group.

The scope of the raids reveal the complex reality of the threat from radical Islamists in Europe, many returning from battlefields in Syria and Iraq.
