7 'Geniuses' Killed by Their Own Creations in Videogames

2015-01-15 2

If you're a scientist or an inventor in a videogame, watch your back. The chances are good you will die at the hands of your creation, or at the giant rusty drill arm of your creation. Why did you even give it one of those? Consider these seven geniuses killed by their best work. (Be careful of spoilers in the video below, although none are for games newer than 2013.)

Sometimes it's an unlucky break for a well-meaning genius, sometimes it's a lethal dose of comeuppance for a hubristic boffin, but either way: videogames love these ironic twists of fate.

Your father in Fallout 3 only wanted to give clean, unirradiated water to everyone in the Capital Wasteland, then died of radiation poisoning when he heroically sabotaged his own water-purifying machine.

The immediate symptoms of acute radiation sickness include vomiting and diarrhoea, which are not shown, and seizures, which are: Dr James Wanderer expires juddering face down on the floor of the Jefferson Memorial.

BioShock's Dr Suchong, on the other hand, created a clanking great monster, taught it to protect little girls, then smacked a little girl in front of it.

The drill arm on a Big Daddy was originally intended for doing deep-sea excavations, but works even better for boring holes through the solar plexus of a fleshy scientist.

Also featured: BioShock Infinite's geniune genius Rosalind Lutece, who made a city float, and Dead Rising 3's dubious 'genius' Dylan Fuentes, who made a phallic flamethrower.

It was only a matter of time before Fuentes came a cropper, but Lutece died (at least technically) on account of sabotage. F.E.A.R's science bigwig Harlan Wade, on the other hand, was a man who deserved to be melted by a telepath and then was melted by a telepath.
