2015-01-07 4

This video lecture from Group IIIA and Group IVA Elements (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers sodium silicate and chemical garden. Sodium silicate is sodium salt of metasilicic acid. It is also called water glass and its solution in water is basic in nature. Soda ash reacts with silica at high temperature in reverberatory furnace to give waterglass and carbondioxide. Chemical garden is formed by beautiful growth of metal salt in water glass solution giving natural colors to the slowly dissolving salt. The phenomenon is demonstrated with example.
