A raging bushfire in Australia’s Adelaide Hills burnt more than 25 thousand acres of land and damaged numerous structures. One of the buildings is a boarding kennel for cats and dogs.

Approximately 40 animals passed away when the flames tore through the facility, Tea Tree Gully Boarding Kennel and Cattery, on Saturday morning. The owners had to run for their own safety due to the speed at which the fire was spreading and unfortunately many of pets weren’t able to get out on their own.

Later in the afternoon, volunteers from The South Australian Country Fire Service arrived on scene to find the kennels had been badly damaged and the building had deteriorated to the point where it was mostly debris.

The kennel has confirmed that 40 dogs survived the bushfire, but all other canines died along with every cat that had been staying at the facility. In a social media post, the kennel owners noted “Our deepest sympathy to all who have suffered a loss. We have lost a home, business and pets we love and feel so awful about the loss of people's beloved pets.”

The surviving dogs have been transferred to a different location, where they will either be picked up by their owners or stay for the time being.
