Connecticut Brewery Apologizes For Putting Gandhi On A Beer Can

A Connecticut brewery has apologizes for anyone it may have offended by featuring an image of Gandhi on one of its beer cans.

In his life Mahatma Gandhi served as a significant proponent of independence, and in the decades since has continued to be lauded for showing that there is power in peaceful resistance.

Connecticut’s New England Brewing Company recently used a robot-like image of the leader on a beer can, a move that resulted in legal action.

The drink in question is called Gandhi-bot and it’s an India Pale Ale.

Associated with the specialty brew is the tagline, “Aromatic and fully vegetarian, Gandhi-Bot is an ideal aid for self-purification and the seeking of truth and love.”

A petition filed in an Indian court calls the use of Gandhi’s image on an alcoholic beverage ‘condemnable’ and also identifies it as being a punishable offense.

Notably, Gandhi himself had spoken against the consumption of such drinks.

The brewery hasn’t mentioned anything about changing the label, but did post an apology concerning it on Facebook.

They express their regrets to anyone offended and offer assurances that no ill will was meant by featuring the slain civil rights leader.

Rather, they simply intended to celebrate the great man’s legacy and encourage people to learn more about him and his important accomplishments and ways.
