An off-duty police officer in Erlanger, Kentucky mistakenly shot himself inside an elevator. The incident occurred on Saturday evening after officer Darryl Jouett dined out with his wife.
The couple was in the lift together when Jouett’s duty pistol, a 40-caliber handgun, went off. Just prior to the accidental discharge, he took the firearm out of its holster, which was on his waistband.
Jouett only used one hand while grabbing the firearm, as his other hand was carrying a box and a bag. It looks like he tried to conceal the gun into his pocket or back into the holster before the elevator door opened but he fumbled with it.
Cincinnati Police Captain Michael John further explained “He was transitioning the holster and transitioning the gun out of his holster... As he was pulling the gun from the holster, a round discharged, ricocheted in the elevator, struck him in the stomach.”
The officer of more than 2 decades was conscious after the accident and was transported to a nearby hospital, where his injuries were listed as non-life-threatening. His wife wasn’t hurt.
