A man in Oldsmar, Florida is facing a charge of first degree murder after his mother was brutally killed. Shortly before 7:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, police responded to home of the victim, identified as 48-year-old Maria Suarez-Cassagne, and discovered that she had been decapitated.

Authorities from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office claim the suspect, 23-year-old Christian Jose Gomez, picked up an ax and struck his mom with the handle before killing her.

Police later found her head in a nearby trash container. Just prior to the fatal incident, Gomez and Suarez-Cassagne had gotten into an argument about moving items into the attic.

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri further explained “He was tired of her telling him to put the boxes away. So he just decided he was going to whack her head off and used an ax to do it.”

Suarez-Cassagne lived in the residence with her two sons. Gomez’s brother woke up after hearing a noise and discovered a trail of blood and the murder weapon. By the time investigators arrived, the suspect had fled but he was found riding a bike not far from the crime scene.

He was taken into custody and interviewed and since then, Gomez has confessed to killing his mother. Reportedly, he suffers from schizophrenia and has a history with law enforcement including a number of prior arrests.
