Some people have to deal with physical pain for decades after a car wreck. One man in Granite City, Illinois, however, was left with something else entirely.

For more than 50 years, a turn signal from a Ford Thunderbird rested in Arthur Lampitt’s arm. It all started in 1963 when he was driving home and the T-Bird hydroplaned.

Lampitt struck a big rig in a head-on collision. He survived the wreck, but did encounter many injuries.

He went on with his life and was completely unaware that a memento from the accident was still in his body. About 35 years after the crash, he got a slight clue something was wrong when he passed through a courthouse metal detector and spotted a decent-sized piece of metal.

An X-ray revealed an object was inside his arm, however Lampitt didn’t report experiencing any pain so no further medical action was taken.

That is until several weeks ago when his arm felt sore and the area started to swell. Lampitt began digging through old photos and noticed the turn signal from his T-Bird was missing after the crash.

Doctors were able to confirm it was indeed the 7-inch lever that was causing all the problems. The surgery to remove it lasted 45 minutes and in the end, Lampitt was able to keep the old turn signal.
