Just by looking at a simple roll of toilet paper, you probably wouldn’t think it has many uses aside from assisting in human cleanliness.

Police in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, however, discovered that toilet paper can actually help in the crime solving process. Well, at least in one case it did.

It all started when a man, identified as 29-year-old Eric Frey entered a local pizza shop and gave a hand written note to an employee.

Scribbled across a sheet of toilet paper was a message that read “I have a gun. Give me $300.” What Frey didn’t know was that the worker had hit a panic button which alerted police of the robbery in progress.

Officers arrived at the business before the suspect had a chance to escape. According to Frey’s version of events, he was forced to carry out the crime because a man in an alley said he planned to shoot him if he didn’t.

Investigators were skeptical of that story, so they went to Frey’s home where they found a roll of stark white toilet paper next to a pen. The indentations on the roll matched the robbery message perfectly, indicating the suspect had written the note before the piece of toilet paper was torn off.

Frey was arrested and remains behind bars.
