Recently, employees from the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo in Israel got a devastating shock. On the facility’s Facebook page, it was confirmed a mother tiger killed her own cubs.
Just a few weeks back, the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo had excitedly shared the news of a Sumatran tigress giving birth to two beautiful cubs.
But in a recent update on their Facebook page, they have announced that sadly, the mother killed her own offspring.
Initially, everything seemed to be perfect, as she was caring for her offspring. Video cameras installed in their enclosure tracked the interactions and no aggressive behavior was detected.
Zoo personnel were going to enter the den for the very first time on Monday but on Friday, they noticed the two cubs were missing. The employees soon reached the conclusion that the cubs were devoured by their own mom.
A zoo veterinarian commented “This is disappointing and very, very sad. This was a complete surprise. We truly thought we were beyond this and that she was on the right path, and we had already planned the next stage. We will learn the lessons.”
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Sumatran tigers are a critically endangered species with less than 700 of them living in the wild today.
