Atomun - Technological advances in Brazil

2014-12-23 5

Welcome to Atomun - TeleSUR's program on science and technology in Latin America, focusing on the human side of science and technology at the service of progress. Today's program begins with the "Out of Orbit" segment, which looks at the problem of space debris. Scientists estimate that there are 50,000 objects of 1 cm. or more orbiting the planet, which pose a risk, not only if they fall to earth, but also to space travelers due to their velocity. Then Brazil's impressive advances in science and technology are discussed. The country has the most advanced space program in Latin America, it produces jets for regional aviation, boasts the world's most advanced automated banking system, and plans are afoot to build its first nuclear submarine. With the aim of democratizing telecommunications, investments are being made in expanding the country's fiber optic network and other infrastructure. Currently, 35% of the nation's households have broadband Internet access and digital cities provide free access to millions of Brazilians. teleSUR
