A school principal in Paterson, New Jersey has been reassigned after a misspelled sign was left hanging up for all to see. For more than a week, the sign rested over Public School Number 20’s entry doors.
At first, nobody seemed to notice the error-ridden message. The sign contained a simple note, alerting parents of December progress reports, along with an early dismissal day and school vacation.
However, the word December was spelled D-I-C-E-M-B-E-R. Additionally, what should have been report was spelled R-E-E-P-O-R and the number 1 was backwards.
It wasn’t long before photos of the sign were shared all over social media. A user soon notified a Paterson Board of Education member, who initially thought the pictures had been photoshopped.
When he learned it was indeed real and still hanging, he was upset to say the least. He commented “We can’t assume because it’s an urban district — inner-city — that things like this can be swept over. If it were a suburban neighborhood parents would be outraged, disgusted.”
The sign has since been removed, and a custodian was blamed for incorrectly arranging the letters.
According to school officials, Principal Antoinette Young wasn’t reassigned for the error, but due to past performance issues.
