After five years in a Cuban prison, American aid worker Alan Gross is on his way home.

A U.S. official said Cuba released Gross on Wednesday, amid reports of a prisoner exchange that heralds a major overhaul of U.S. policy toward Cuba.

Gross had been arrested in 2009.

He was later convicted for importing banned technology and trying to establish clandestine internet service for Cuban Jews.

The U.S. official said the 65-year-old was released on humanitarian grounds.
