Haiti’s Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe announced his resignation on Sunday in the wake of widespread anti-government protests in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
“I am leaving the post of prime minister this evening with a feeling of accomplishment,” Lamothe said in a televised address, Haiti’s communication ministry tweeted from its official account.

Some of the demonstrations in Haiti’s capital have turned violent as protesters have grown increasingly angry over the delay of elections which were expected to have been held in 2011.
On Saturday, one man was shot dead during protests in the Haitian capital calling for both the president and prime minister to resign.
Lamothe’s resignation had been widely expected after President Michel Martelly agreed on Friday to ask him to step down after accepting the recommendations of a presidential commission.
President Martelly is expected to meet with government officials on Monday to discuss the commission’s report which also recommended disbanding Haiti’s electoral council and freeing political prisoners.
