Police protests sweep US

They marched in their thousands in cities across the U.S. - the latest backlash against police killings of unarmed black Americans.

These were the scenes in New York where more than 10,000 turned out in Manhattan.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NATHAN JAMES, PROTESTER, SAYING:

"I feel like there's a lot going on right now in our society that are putting black men into one monolith and seeing all as one person instead of seeing us as somebody's son, somebody's uncle, somebody's brother, somebody's husband."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) BRANDI ELLIS, PROTESTER, SAYING:

"It's not just a racial problem in my eyes. I think it's a big problem across the board. I think the whole militarisation of the police state is a big problem and it needs to be stopped."

In Washington DC they gathered in Freedom Plaza before starting a three-mile march to rally in front of the U.S. Capitol.
