FSc Chemistry Book2, CH 11, LEC 16 Physical and Chemical Properties Ethers (Part 2)

2014-12-12 2

This video lecture from Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the physical properties and chemical reactivity of ethers. Ethers are less soluble in water while readily dissolve in organic solvents. This is because of lower order hydrogen bonding with water. In the absence of hydrogen bonds ethers have far lower melting and boiling points compared to their alcohol counterparts. Ethers are chemically inert towards most reagents while very strong acids like HI do react with ethers yielding alcohols.
