Ukrainians bury time capsule at destroyed war memorial

Braving frigid temperatures and brisk wind these Ukrainians arrive at a destroyed World War II monument in Donetsk.

A soldier's boot stands tall among the debris -- the scene of fierce fighting last August, when separatists retook the strategic overlook from government troops.

Some residents say they'd gladly donate money to see a chapel constructed in its place:

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) SNEZHNOYE RESIDENT TATIANA RUDYK, SAYING:

"We want our monument to be reconstructed and a new monument to be built for those boys who were killed here, who gave their lives for us, our children, for our parents."

But until then, a ceremony... to remember the pro-Russian separatists killed in the conflict here.

Complete with a time capsule, with the names of the dead buried in the earth -- a symbolic reminder of those who lost their lives in the fight for land.
