Hagel explains to soldiers why 1,000 of them must stay in Afghanistan

Outgoing U-S Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel visiting Afghanistan Sunday...meeting with troops and answering questions.

The visit comes just after Hagel announced that up to 1,000 extra troops will remain in the country next year.

He responded to one soldier's question, saying the ongoing battle against Islamic State in Iraq has nothing to do with troop movements in Afghanistan.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SECRETARY OF DEFENSE CHUCK HAGEL SAYING:

"Our role is different in Iraq as it is here. And Iraq has been an ally. We, as you all know and many of you served there, invested our blood and our treasure there to help the Iraqi people. But in the end -- and it's really much about the question of missions and objectives -- and in the end each country must take the responsibility for their own futures and for their own fate and for governing themselves."
