Just in time for the holidays, a three-legged dog in California has landed a new home. Named Peter, he’s a mix between a pit bull and a Queensland heeler.
The two-year-old pooch hasn’t had an easy life by any means. Riverside police discovered him in a terrible state while investigating a residence.
Staffers from Riverside County Animal Services arrived at the home and witnessed Peter underneath a vehicle. He was only able to use his front legs to crawl.
Peter had been severely neglected. Portions of his bone were visible in his left hind leg, and veterinarians were forced to amputate it because it had been left untreated for an extended period of time.
An animal services doctor explained, “That wound, whatever it was, left unattended for literally months at a time, caused the lower part of the leg essentially to mummify...to die off and mummify.”
Now that painful ordeal is behind him. In the month since police discovered him, Peter has recovered and is getting around rather well with just three legs.
The pooch has been adopted by a woman in Riverside County. Reportedly, when she saw him, it was love at first sight.
Peter's former owners will most likely be charged with animal cruelty.
