Ukraine’s eastern region of Donetsk has become a bone of contention between the US-backed new Kiev’s government and pro-Russian largely left wing rebels. The newly declared People’s Republic of Donetsk has been gripped with violence since the government in Kiev launched military operations in mid-April 2014. The flames of the conflict were fanned when the anti-Russian Kiev government insulted the thirty percent ethnic Russians in the country by marginalizing their language. While to the rebels the incumbent Ukrainian government is fascist, to the Kiev new rulers, rebels are terrorists. Now months after deadly clashes, people of every ethnicity in Ukraine need to be vigilant and strive to settle their issues without resorting to the Western or Eastern powers.
