South African HIV activists try to shift focus to prevention

In South Africa, the battle against H-I-V continues (is far from won).

These activists on the streets Daveyton, a township outside Johannesburg, want to educate people about how H-I-V is spread...and most importantly, how it is PREVENTED.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) HIV ACTIVIST, JABU MAHLANGU, SAYING:

"We need our government to do campaign about preventing. Even on TV, radios -- everywhere when you go, big boards."

The message does not seem to be getting out.

(SOUNDBITE) (Zulu) DAVEYTON RESIDENT, GCINILE MABASO, SAYING:

"There isn't much the government is doing. There are no billboards that tell us that HIV is dangerous and what we can do. There aren't many adverts either, there are only a few."

South Africa has the highest number of H-I-V-AIDS cases in the world.

In 2004, the government rolled out an enormous program to provide medication for people infected with the virus.

They spend over 500 dollars per infected person.
