Real estate speculation, spurred by the increase in tourism and large capital investment flows, has driven social segregation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While Rio's real estate prices have increased 600% since 2008, the lower classes have been forced to move to the outskirts of the city, not being able to afford such hikes.
