There are many Christians and Muslims in the communist parties of Kerala who do not mix religion and politics. Without betraying either one, they execute well their duties in both. Unlike the Hindus who are not at all are burdened and controlled by their temples, the Christians and Muslims in the communist parties of Kerala, inside a rigid religious set up, are doing a double battle. The one is of battling for party’s ideologies, and the other is of defending their party’s ideologies inside their religious organizations and explaining how and why their party is not condemning the church and mosque even while severely criticizing religion. If party does not take care and soften, the second struggle weakens and the comrade becomes no more able to defend party inside his religious organization. Being his life-line to social communion and societal existence, he cannot abandon church and mosque. So, in the end, he is forced to abandon party, regardless of how sincere, loyal and devoted he had been to party. Communist parties of Kerala lost thousands of dedicated party members this way, due to rotten outlook and attitude of party leaders. When things are going quite well, one of these leaders will develop brain fever and call for destruction of all churches and mosques, alienating more Christian and Muslim members. A Brahmin leader was the source of these brain fevers. Quite a number of communist leaders were well aware of this dilemma and they conferred and suggested a new party line of co-operating with non-aggressive Christian and Muslim organizations so that they too can be brought to mainstream. Mr. E.K.Nayanar, M.V.Raghavan, Chatthunni Master, C.P.Moossankutty, C.K.Chakrapani and so many others, all MLAs, were in this line. But the feverish leader we mentioned took the sword against this and caused the ousting of many of them from party, resulting in the split in the party in 1986. The end result: the church and mosque became powerful and the party weakened.
