It was in ancient Lanka that the first man-beast military alliance was formed and enforced. Lanka bred purely Dravidian culture and civilization. Arts, literature, science and music flourished there and Raavana with ten heads just means intelligence unlimited. Just as Raama was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Raavana was an equal, disciple or favourite of several gods. The intellectual achievements of ancient Lankans were disparaged in Raamaayana just because they bravely opposed Aryan invasion. Administration in Lanka was divided among Raavanan’s and his brother Vibhishanan’s clans. The first handled textiles, distilleries, education and martial arts and the second had portfolios of revenue, finance and public administration in the ministry. Though these two brothers differed much in character and opinions, they were brothers anyway. After the fall of Lanka, due to pride, both clans left their native island and reached the coast of Kerala via Thalai Mannaar and Raameswaram. Vibhishana’s clan went along with Raman Army to Tamil Nadu where using their abilities they became administrators in kingdoms where they were received. They became Illatthu Pillais or the Nair Community. Raavanaa’s people, finding that the others went the Tamil Nadu way, turned the other way towards the northern parts of Kerala. Their proficiency in the portfolios of textiles, distilleries, education and martial arts helped them set up homes and professions on their way. In Travancore which was nearer, they said they came from Ezhuvatthu Naadu province in Lanka; they came to be known as Ezhavaa’s. In distant northern Kerala, they never mentioned Ezhuvatthu Nadu for none had heard it there. So they said they were islanders, and in Malabaar, they came to be called Dweepers and later Theeyyers. Lankan community which immigrated to South India after the epic war became two major castes of Kerala, sharing brotherhood and blood relationship. If they learn this they will stop fighting each other and turn against Aryan Brahmins and that is why all Raamayanas except Agasthya’s never mention this migration and evolution into castes in Kerala.
There have been different interpretations of the real culture and civilization of islanders who lived in Ceylon when it was the majestic kingdom of Lanka ruled by Raavana. As he was a Dravidian King, defeated in wit and battle by the Aryan emperor Raama, he and his people were caricatured as a very bad lot, by historians of the victors which always happens. They refused to consider ancient Lankans as witty and wise super human beings.
