Time travel has always been a fascination for man, in his literature and in his imagination. When we travel, we travel through space. But in time travel, the concept is, we makes space stand still and travel through time to the past or the future. From H.G.Wells’ Time Machine to Michael Crichton’s Sphere, there have been many famous novels created in English and in other languages, based on this theme. There has not been but one single poem, in any language, based on the theme of time travel. This here is the first poem ever written on this subject, in Malayalam or in any other language. Written in November 1998 and originally titled Muppathu..Munnooru..Moonnu Kodi ( Thirty..Three Hundred..Thirty Million), it was first published in print as an introduction in poetical form to a book of poetry titled Kaalam Jaalaka Vaathilil (Time Upon My Window Sill) by P.S.Remesh Chandran, released in Press Club, Trivandrum on 10 February 1999 by Mr. Gopinath Muthukaadu, the renowned magician, the first copy to Mr. M. Rajagopalan Nair, District Public Prosecutor and Government Pleader of Trivandrum, in the presence of Mr. Sukumar, writer and Narmma Kairali President. This book held three records to its credit- the first book in print in Malayalam to appear in author’s own handwriting, the last book in Malayalam to appear in the old, real Malayalam script, and the first poetry book ever to appear in print with an introduction written in poetry. This book is out-of-print now.

The poem describes a journey back through time, beginning from when the writer was thirty years old and his republic that is India thirty seven. Customary poets of the past tactfully and skillfully incorporated into their works their age, and if appropriate, their nativity and whereabouts. Here also it is observed. The traveller passes ages and arrives at the possible most distant past, i.e., Three thousand Million Years, looking at the face of the earth being wrought and roasted in unending showers of flaming meteors and blue-hot comets. Standing there he wonders, had he could have been able to travel to Three thousand Million Years, he could have witnessed the scene of the earth revolving as a nebula of gas and dust far above boiling point. It is not known if he did it, never to return but to be blown to smithereens and scattered among specks of star particles!
