USA: AFRICAN AMERICANS CALL FOR BOYCOTT OF 'BLACK FRIDAY'
With thousands of Americans taking to the streets in protest of the controversial grand jury decision not to indict white police officer Darren Wilson who shot dead unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri August 9, some are opting for different ways of making their voices heard. A new online campaign is underway urging citizens, and African Americans in particular, to boycott “Black Friday”, when stores offer exceptional "one day only" bargains to mark the beginning of Christmas shopping season in the US and the campaign is starting to prove pretty popular indeed.
Many have pledged their support online, posting under the #NotOneDime hashtag promising not to spend any money at all on “Black Friday” 2014. Social networkers say a boycott of the famous shopping day is definitely the best way to show their outrage and weariness over police brutality in a nation where cash is king.
But as some supporters of the movement have suggested, the boycott need not apply to all stores. The people who posted these messages say shoppers should stop by African-American businesses. And there are even some mobile phone apps and websites which will help you find them in just a few clicks. 24
