Observation tower in Amazon to monitor climate change

This observation tower in the middle of the Amazon jungle in Brazil will monitor the effects of climate change.

It will soar 325 metres above the ground when it's completed at the end of this year. And, it'll be the tallest of its kind.

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) RESEARCHER FOR THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF RESEARCH INTO THE AMAZON, ANTONIO MANZI, SAYING:

"At this stage in the construction, to have two thirds of the tower already in place is a source of great joy for us."

Researchers say its superior height will allow data collected from the air to be more precise.

Brazil's annual greenhouse gas emission last year increased for the first time since 2004, a report on Wednesday showed.

Environmentalists are urging the government to stop the destruction of the rainforest and reduce the dependency on fossil-fuel.
