New York City’s Times Square is a major tourist destination for good reason as the area is filled with flashing screens and lots of very bright lights. Now, Times Square is home to the ‘world's largest high-definition video display.’
New York City’s Times Square is now home to the ‘world's largest high-definition video display.’ Not only is it the biggest, but it’s also the most expensive digital billboard in the vicinity.
The screen is installed on the side of the Marriott Marquis hotel. It faces an intersection that is passed by an average of 115,000 motorists and 300,000 pedestrians daily.
The display reportedly stands 8 stories high and in width, it’s comparable in size to a football field. Hundreds of tourists flocked to the area to watch as the billboard was turned on for the very first time on Tuesday.
Google is the first company to rent the billboard. Goggle’s ads will dominate the screen from November 24th until the New Year. The cost to rent the display for a four-week period is said to be $2.5 million.
Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins hopes the new screen will attract more tourists to the area.
He remarked “This is the one place on the planet where people seek out, take pictures of and then transmit advertisement. The phenomenon that happens in Times Square is that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.”
