The Navy and Marine Corps of South Korea staged a large-scale amphibious landing drill on Tuesday (November 18) as part of their annual joint military exercises.

On a beach near the port city of Pohang, about 370 km (230 miles) southeast of Seoul, about 1,900 soldiers participated in the Hoguk drills.

The Marines said 20 amphibious assault vehicles, 20 warships, as well as 40 aircraft were mobilised for the drill.

South Korea's Defence Ministry has said the military will hold the Hoguk defence exercise for two weeks from November 10 and mobilise 330,000 troops.

Last week, North Korea denounced South Korea for the annual military drills, saying they were a rehearsal for war.
