The two-pointed hat said to have been worn by Napoleon during the Battle of Marengo fetched 2.4 million dollars at an auction held in Paris.

Napoleon Bonaparte served as France’s emperor for 15 years, and in that time led its army on many successful campaigns.

A two-pointed hat known as a bicorne said to have been worn by the ruler during the Battle of Marengo recently fetched the equivalent of around 2.4 million dollars at an auction held near Paris.

When wearing it, and those similar, Napoleon preferred to position them so the points ran side to side, rather than front to back.

The silhouette it gave him on the battlefield inspired the nickname ‘The Bat’, given by the opposition.

It’s known that the winning bidder hailed from South Korea, but further information about the individual has not been made available.
The item opened at a much lower sum and the maximum it was expected to draw was 500 thousand dollars.

The historic accessory was one of many Napoleon Bonaparte related items available at the sale.

Among the others were pairs of socks and small medals.

All of them were offered by Monaco’s royal family.

Prince Andrew of Monaco said prior to the sale, "I prefer to give a new lease on life to this collection of objects and relics ... rather than to see them remain in the shadows."
