German Chancellor Angela Merkel surprised patrons in Brisbane on Friday night (November 14), posing for 'selfies' at popular nightspots along Caxton Street.

The German Chancellor mingled with revellers in the Queensland capital, where she is attending the G20 summit.

In a video, filmed by Sarah Keayes, a woman can be heard saying in German "Welcome to Australia" as the Chancellor approaches.

A seemingly surprised Merkel replies "Why do you know German?" before shaking hands with members of the public and posing for photos.

On Saturday (November 15), Merkel said the European Union is considering further financial sanctions against Russian individuals because of the crisis in Ukraine.

She told reporters at the G20 leaders summit in Brisbane that the 'present situation is not satisfying'.
