At least four people are now known to have died in mudslides and flooding in the north of Italy.

A elderly man was killed by a landslide outside his home amid torrential rain on Wednesday.

He was with a neighbour who survived. They had reportedly gone to look at water pouring down a hill near their homes when the landslide started.

An elderly couple was buried alive after their home was crushed in an onslaught of mud on Tuesday.

At Genoa’s airport, torrential rain caused a power cut and delays to flights.

Some towns are reported to have had more than 20 centimetres of rain in just 12 hours.

High alert levels are expected to remain in place until at least Thursday.
