A man in North Carolina is incredibly lucky to be alive after he spent 17 long hours trapped underneath a vehicle. Joseph Woodring is now recovering in the hospital from his ordeal.

The crash occurred on October 28th. Woodring had fallen asleep at the wheel and drove off a cliff in Boone. His truck plummeted down at least 60 feet.

The auto landed upside down and Woodring was reportedly thrown out of his seat. He was left pinned underneath the vehicle until help arrived to free him.

For those 17 hours, Woodring was forced to do everything he could to survive. His aunt, Trish Miller explained “He was very smart. He caught rain water in a little can to drink. He made a pillow out of grass, stuffed his shirt full of grass. And he had his pocket knife and cut the lining of the seat to get the cloth to make a blanket. He's definitely a survivalist.”

Woodring’s leg has since been amputated above the knee, but he’s already mobile again with help from a walker.

Although the focus is on his recovery, Woodring also has some issues to work out stemming from the wreck. He has been charged with failure to maintain lane control and exceeding a safe speed.
