French President Francois Hollande visited a new war memorial at Notre Dame de Lorette in Ablain-Saint-Nazaire on Tuesday, Armistice Day.
The new memorial is an elliptical ring engraved with the names of the 580,000 men who died in northern France during the First World War.
Designed by the architect Philippe Prost, it pays respect to fighters of all nationalities who perished here between 1914 and 1918.
It is situated is on the edge of the Notre-Dame de Lorette French war cemetery, itself containing the bodies of over 40,000 soldiers.
The year 2014 marks the centennial commemoration for the soldiers who fought in the First World War.
