North Korea's Kim appears with cane

North Korea's state media broadcast a new documentary on Tuesday (November 11) in which leader Kim Jong Un was seen using a walking cane.

North Korean state television channel KRT showed a video of Kim visiting numerous sites in Pyongyang and Anju after a long absence from the public eye, ending speculation over his health and grip on power in the secretive state.

KRT said the video was filmed in September and October 2014 but did not specify exact dates of each visit.

South Korea's intelligence agency said that Kim, who rules North Korea as supreme leader, was likely to have undergone surgery on his left ankle to treat complications stemming from a cyst.

Kim, who has visibly gained weight since coming to power after his father died of a heart attack in 2011, and has been seen walking with a limp since taking part in an event with officials in July.

He then disappeared from official media reports after a news report
