After almost four years of major restoration work, Egypt’s Great Sphinx of Giza and the courtyard in front is to reopen to the public.
Top officials, including the prime minister, attended a ceremony at the site, where one of three pyramids is also reopening after lengthy repairs.
Egypt’s Antiquities Minister, Mamdouh el-Damaty, said:
“The Sphinx courtyard is being opened for the first time to visitors after the restoration of the body of the Sphinx, the neck and left side of the body, and at the same time, we’re also opening for the first time, the temple of King Amenhotep the Second”
Located on the outskirts of Cairo, the Sphinx is one of the most visited monuments in the world.
But restoration was needed to stop damage from pollution and underground water.
