Resty Rivera( PHILIPPINES) - Dangers Lurk

2014-11-10 6

As we walk along in mindless prattle.
Leaves rustle and seed-pods rattle.

Castanets shake in winter’s breeze.
Tree tops tilt and sway with ease.

Distant birds announce early return.
To meadow nests hidden in dry fern.

Eyes catch movement to reveal to me.
Partridge and babies beneath a tree.

Squirrels scatter over the ground.
A doe and fawn leaps then bound.

Off to a thicket of tall green pines.
Refuge found that leaves no signs.

Neath icy winds and snow drifts deep.
Dwellers in hollows still take to sleep.

I stop for a moment to ponder a print.
What could this be that left me a hint.

There on the ground in a pile of snow.
I found a footprint of a bear paw below.

It was so big and as fresh as can be.
I looked around and quickly did flee.

All in the wood is not cute and sweet.
Beware dangers that lurk at your feet.

Critters in winter all do not slumber.
Bears decide to hunt and plunder.
