In memory of Leonard Opalov
To me Latvian poets seemed quite rare,
But I knew one called Leonard Opalov.
He wrote me charming letters from The Bronx
before cancer made him change his address.
I wrote his eulogy for 'Bitterroot',
A magazine that honored Leonard's verse.
The birds of New York sing his poetry.
More than a few love Yiddish, I am told.
