I saw the last light ending
Of the love I'd treasured long,
The birds that rested in the trees
No longer had a song,
And there stood I without a friend
Alone within this town,
And watched the summer fading
As the roses turned to brown.
Their withered heads hung limply
As they draped unto the floor,
Those flowers there that gave me joy
Gave nothing anymore,
For through that mass of twisted thorns
Where all my hopes did drown,
I saw the pain unending
As the roses turned to brown.
When 'neath that arbour where we'd kissed
I thought you were my Queen,
Who'd be with me for evermore
Yet luck was cruel and mean,
Where once I'd felt just like a King
I lost my golden crown,
That melted to the sunset
As the roses turned to brown.
