STORY: Much of Italy had a brief respite from a maximum weather alert on Saturday (November 8) although forecasters warned that torrential rain could resume early next week over various regions of Italy.
A tropical cyclone and torrential rainfall hit the Sicilian coast on Friday (November 7) and continued until about 8 am local time (0700GMT) on Saturday. Catania was violently lashed by the wind and rain throughout the night. Wind was blowing at 100 km/hr (62 mi/hr), trees were uprooted, some cars were hit by falling trees and roofs were ripped from buildings.
