Colours cascading
Stripping nature’s coat
Oaks, elms even the silver birch
Stretching skywards
Bare fingers reaching up
Playing tag in the breeze
Flexing
Dancing
Bending
So supple and strong
Beneath lay the carpet of withered life
Slowly decaying
Re-nourishing mother earth
Here and there occasional caps break free
One last autumnal crop
Fungi settling till spring
Puffballs collapsing inwards
Nurturing next year’s growth
Blanketed spores
Protected in leaf mould
Nature’s cycle
Sleeping giants
Hibernating wildlife
Cosy and hidden deep
Springs promised return eclipsed
Winter its forerunner
